For the first time in Kenya’s development trajectory, the sector has received strategic attention backed by coordinated policy instruments, financial allocations, institutional reforms, and nationwide delivery frameworks.

 

This agricultural renewal has not emerged by chance. It is the result of deliberate government action to correct longstanding structural inefficiencies while leveraging grassroots energy, cooperative movements, and smart technologies to deliver inclusive prosperity. BETA’s approach is systemic, it begins with the farmer, reforms the supply chain, modernizes infrastructure, unlocks capital, and guarantees markets. The results speak for themselves.

 

Expanding Input Access: Affordable Fertilizer and Certified Seeds for Every Farmer

 

One of the most significant barriers to productivity among smallholder farmers has been the prohibitive cost of inputs, particularly fertilizer and quality seeds. Under BETA, this barrier has been systematically dismantled through a historic scale-up of input subsidies and distribution infrastructure.

  • Over 9.5 million 50kg bags of subsidized fertilizer were distributed to farmers across all 47 counties, at a subsidized rate of KSh 2,500 per bag, compared to market prices of up to KSh 6,500.
  • This enabled a planting coverage increase of more than 650,000 additional acres, particularly in maize, rice, and horticultural crops.

  • Through the Kenya National Trading Corporation (KNTC) and the NCPB, smallholder produce is now absorbed through guaranteed procurement schemes at pre-announced prices, shielding farmers from price shocks and predatory middlemen.
  • Strategic alliances have been signed between farmer cooperatives and institutional buyers, such as the National School Feeding Programme, disciplined forces, government hospitals, and correctional services, creating predictable demand for staple crops, dairy, and horticultural products.
